Why Fall Cleanup Matters for Louisville Yards

Most of the spring problems we're called out for started the fall before. A few things happen in Louisville yards between October and March that make a fall cleanup worth doing.

Wet leaves smother turf. A layer of leaves left on a fescue lawn through November rains turns into a wet mat that blocks light and holds moisture against the grass. By March, the result is thin, yellow, or bare patches that need overseeding. Clearing leaves before they mat down is far cheaper than repairing turf in spring.

Winter weeds get established in fall. Henbit, chickweed, and hairy bittercress germinate in the fall, not the spring. They sit quietly through winter and then explode in March, flowering and dropping seed before most people have picked up a rake. Pulling them while they're small in October and November cuts next year's weed pressure dramatically.

Clay soil and freeze-thaw are hard on beds. Most of the Louisville metro sits on heavy clay. When saturated beds freeze and thaw over and over, soil heaves, edges collapse, and shallow-rooted plants get pushed up. Clean, edged beds with a proper layer of mulch handle winter much better than beds full of debris and spent growth.

Pests and disease overwinter in debris. Fungal leaf spot, powdery mildew, and plenty of insects ride out winter in fallen leaves and dead plant material. Removing that debris from beds and fence lines breaks the cycle before it starts again in spring.

What's Included in the Special

Every property is different, so we price each cleanup after we see it. The special covers these four fall cleanup services. Need more detail on any of them? See our full fall cleanup checklist.

Weed Removal

We pull weeds by hand from beds, borders, walkways, and hardscape joints, roots and all, so they don't come right back. That includes winter annuals like henbit and chickweed before they set seed. Pulled weeds go in the trailer, not the compost pile.

Flower Bed Cleanup

We pull spent annuals, cut back perennials that are done for the year, clear leaves and debris out of the beds, and re-cut a clean spade edge so the bed line reads sharp all winter. An optional mulch top-off finishes the job. See our softscaping services for more on beds and mulch.

Fence Line Cleanup

Fence lines are where yards get away from people. We clear weeds, vines, and invasive bush honeysuckle growing along and through fences, trim overgrowth back off the fence, and haul it all away. Bush honeysuckle is one of the most aggressive invasive shrubs in Kentucky, and fall, when it holds its leaves longer than native plants, is the easiest time to spot it and get it out.

Backyard Cleanup

For yards that need a full reset, we clear leaves, fallen branches, overgrowth, and general debris, then haul it away. This is the service people book before selling a house, before the holidays, or just to stop staring at a backyard they've been avoiding. Pair it with our lawn and turf services or tree care if the lawn or trees need attention too.

Fall Cleanup FAQs

When is the best time for fall cleanup in Louisville?

Late October through early December works best for most Louisville yards. Most leaves are down by then, perennials have gone dormant, and winter weeds are still small enough to pull cleanly. We schedule cleanups throughout the season, so earlier visits are fine too.

Do you haul away debris?

Yes. Leaves, branches, pulled weeds, cut-back perennials, and overgrowth are loaded up and hauled off the property. You won't be left with piles at the curb.

Can I combine cleanup with mulch?

Yes. A fresh mulch top-off is the natural finish to a bed cleanup, and many homeowners add it to the same visit. We'll quote it as an option when we walk the property.

Do I need to be home?

No. We like to walk the property with you during the estimate, but for the cleanup itself you don't need to be there, as long as we can reach the work areas and any gates are unlocked.

How do I get the discount?

Call (502) 889-8946 or request a quote through the website and mention the Fall Cleanup Special. The 10% is applied to the fall cleanup services on your written estimate.
